The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced today that customers now have real-time arrival information for four additional subway lines – on their smartphones and on station countdown clocks – as MTA New York City Transit moves forward on its accelerated efforts to bring countdown clocks to all subway lines by the end of this year.

Real-time arrival information for the  lines is now live thanks to NYC Transit’s in-house development of beacon technology, an innovative way to provide information using Bluetooth technology and the Wi-Fi networks already in place for customer use. Arrival times are displayed on LCD screens inside subway station mezzanines and platforms, and are also available on the MTA’s SubwayTime app.

The expedited push to install the technology in stations is part of the MTA’s Subway Action Plan to stabilize and modernize the century-old subway system and improve communication with customers.

“Real-time arrival information is no longer just a nice amenity to have – it’s a necessity at a time when our customers are accustomed to having access to information in their hands almost immediately,” said MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota.  “This is just one of many improvements we’re making to ensure that our customers are getting the clearest, most up-to-date information about their commute.”

With train arrival information going live on these four subway lines, 419 of the system’s 472 subway stations now offer real time arrival information.

Train arrival times are now available on the  and 42 St  shuttle lines, as well as the Staten Island Railway.
