DEC ANNOUNCES NEW ONLINE RESERVATIONS FOR 2021 CAMPING SEASON AT STONEY POND STATE FOREST, MADISON COUNTY

Campsite Reservations Now Being Accepted for May 1 through Sept. 30

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced campers are now able to reserve a campsite online for designated campsites at the Stoney Pond State Forest camping area in the town of Nelson, Madison County. Camping is free at Stoney Pond State Forest and there is no fee associated with the online reservation system.

Region 7 Director Matthew Marko said, "Automating the permit process for these campsites streamlines the reservation system and enhances opportunities for visitors to connect with nature and enjoy this popular facility."

Camping permits are required for use of any of the 17 designated campsites on Stoney Pond State Forest from May 1 to Sept. 30 each year. Prior to the new online system, DEC manually issued permits to campers for more than 15 years. During some years, a lottery system was used to address demand for these permits. The transition to the State’s online camping reservation system increases convenience and expands opportunities for enjoying a camping experience on this public forest. Campers are now able to make reservations 24 hours a day online at https://newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com by searching “Stoney Pond.” Reservations can only be booked online, not through the Reservation Call Center or at the regional DEC offices.

Stoney Pond State Forest consists of 1,469 acres of forested land with a multi-use trail system that is popular for skiing/snowshoeing in the winter and hiking in the summer. The designated campsites are located on the south side of Stoney Pond, a 44-acre pond available for non-motorized boating and fishing. All 17 campsites are available for tent camping and many are compatible with small camping trailers. Two sites are walk-in and reachable only by foot. Three sites are designated for visitors of all abilities and feature wheelchair access. All campsites are primitive in style and amenities are limited. A potable water source is not available. Fire rings are located at most sites and two portable toilets are available during the camping season.
