Long Island City, NY (May 30, 2017) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Bricklayers & Allied Craft Workers of NY & LI, Local Union #1, will conduct a recruitment from June 30, 2017 through May 25, 2018 for ten bricklayer-mason apprentices; five stone mason apprentices; ten pointer, caulker, & cleaner apprentices; and five plasterer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications will be available at the International Masonry Institute, 12-07 44^th Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on the following dates: 06/30/17, 09/29/17, 10/27/17, 11/17/17, 12/15/17, 01/26/18, 02/23/18, 03/30/18, 04/27/18, and 05/25/18.  Doors open at 8:00 a.m. There will be no admittance after 8:30 a.m. An aptitude test will be conducted at the time of application. Testing will be held until 10:00 a.m.  Mail-in or online applications will not be accepted.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture (this could be a birth certificate, state issued driver’s license, or any state or federal identification showing date of birth).
• Must have a high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must provide DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must pass the JATC Basic Assessment Skills Exam (a reading and math comprehension exam administered during the application process).
• Must be willing to commute within the Jurisdiction of Local Union #1, which includes all five boroughs of New York City, Nassau, and Suffolk counties.
• Must have reliable means of transportation to locations where no reasonable access to public transportation exists.
• Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves or others.
• Must sign an affidavit stating that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade(s), which may include:
• Working with hand tools and power tools.
• Exposure to loud noise, hazardous machinery, hazardous voltages, and respiratory irritants.
• Prolonged standing, climbing, walking, squatting, stretching, and bending.
• Working indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.   
• Working in confined areas where movement is greatly limited.
• Lifting and moving heavy supplies and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Working from ladders, scaffolds, and personnel lifts.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.
