Due to a major improvement project to replace the roof at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Salmon River Fish Hatchery, the hatchery will be closed to the public from Aug. 24 - 26. 

The $576,700 project to replace the 25-year old deteriorated roof was previously identified as a critical fish hatchery infrastructure project to be completed with NY Works funding. 

DEC expects the facility to reopen to the public on August 27, but those planning on making a trip to the hatchery should call first to be sure that construction work is completed and the facility is open.  The Salmon River Fish Hatchery can be reached at 315-298-5051. 

The Salmon River Fish Hatchery is located on 2133 County Route 22, one mile northeast of the Village of Altmar, Oswego County. The hatchery is normally open to the public from April 1 (weather permitting - call the hatchery for the spring opening date) to November 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. DEC’s Rome Hatchery is open to the public and is located on State Route 46, 2 miles north of the City of Rome, and is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
