NEW STARTING LOCATION FOR SATURDAY CAPITOL TOURS |
|
New York State Office of General Services (OGS) Commissioner RoAnn Destito today announced that beginning April 6, visitors with advanced reservations for free Saturday tours of the New York State Capitol will enter the building and begin their tours at the Washington Avenue entrance. The Capitol’s State Street Lobby information desk will continue to serve as the starting point for free weekday walk-in tours.
“The Capitol’s Washington Avenue entrance will provide visitors with a point of entry that is easier to find and allow better accessibility for those with special needs and mobility issues,” Commissioner Destito said. “The Capitol’s Washington Avenue entrance is located across the street from the New York State Education Building, so this change will greatly simplify matters for people interested in making reservations to tour both of these architectural marvels on a Saturday.”
Sitting atop Albany’s State Street hill, the New York State Capitol has served as the seat of government for New York since the 1880s. The building is a marvel of late 19th century architectural grandeur, built by hand of solid masonry over a period of 32 years.
Highlights of the hour-long tours can include the legislative chambers, Hall of Governors, Governor’s Reception Room, Hall of New York, historic staircases, and carvings.
