DEC ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF BUTTERFIELD LAKE BOAT LAUNCH FOR REHABILITATION PROJECT

Temporary Closure Begins June 8

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the temporary closure of the Butterfield Lake Boat Launch and Fishing Access Site located in the Town of Alexandria, Jefferson County, for major site improvements and boat launch ramp replacement designed to make the launch safer and more functional. The project starts on Monday, June 8, and continues through early fall.

The entire site will be closed to public access for the duration of the project, including the launch ramp and parking area. DEC encourages visitors to plan accordingly due to lack of access to the entire site.

Improvements to the site include a new concrete ramp and abutment with a floating dock, parking area improvements, and shoreline stabilization around the ramp. Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant features will be added, including pavement with striping that includes compliant van and vehicle-with-trailer parking spaces, access aisles, and a port-a-john.

DEC will conduct the rehabilitation as quickly as possible to minimize disruption while ensuring the work is completed properly and safely. DEC anticipates the new and improved launch will be available for use by the public in early fall. Updates will be provided to the public as information becomes available.

Anglers are encouraged to explore other nearby fishing opportunities during the site closure. Please note that DEC launches on several of the nearby lakes have a 10hp motor restriction. Those are identified at Boat Launch Sites for Jefferson County - NYSDEC

Anglers can also use their smart phones to find trout fishing opportunities around the state by accessing the Tackle Box feature in DEC’s HuntFishNY app. The Tackle Box provides one-stop-shopping for information on access sites, stocking, regulations and more. Information on how to download the app can be found on DEC’s website. Anglers are encouraged to check out these valuable resources when planning their next fishing trip.

For questions about the project and closure please contact DEC Region 6 at information.R6@dec.ny.gov.
