Poughkeepsie, NY (August 25, 2014) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Laborers’ International Union of North America, Local Union #235 (formerly Local Union #1000), will conduct a recruitment from August 25, 2014 through August 24, 2015 for five skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that the five openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Capital District and Hudson Valley regions.  This program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester. 

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #235, 41 Knollwood Road, Elmsford, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications will not be available on the following holidays: 9/1/14, 11/11/14, 11/27/14, 12/25/14, 01/01/15, and 07/04/15.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
• Must be physically able to perform the work required of a laborer.
• Must submit to physical exams as required by federal regulations for hazardous waste and asbestos removal.
• Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites and related instruction classes.
• Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
