Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

Brewster, NY (August 25, 2014) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #38 will conduct a recruitment from September 22, 2014 through May 29, 2015 for 15 sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #38, 38 Starr Ridge Road, Brewster, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must be willing and able to travel within the jurisdiction of Local Union #38, which includes: the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester in New York; and the counties of Fairfield and Litchfield in Connecticut.
  • Must submit to drug testing, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must take a math and measurement test administered by Local Union #38. The trade requires an extensive amount of math and work with rulers.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
