North America Cup Bobsled & Skeleton Returns to Lake Placid

Olympic Qualifying Racing for Bobsled & Skeleton

(December 25, 2017) --- The Athletes not competing on the IBSF World Cup series will have one more opportunity to qualify for February’s Olympic Winter Games, when North America Cup bobsled and skeleton racing returns to Lake Placid, N.Y., January 3-14, 2018. Top bobsled and skeleton athletes from Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Croatia, Jamaica, Israel, Italy, Nigeria and New Zealand will all try to tackle the challenging Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex course and punch their ticket to February’s winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

WHAT: North America Cup bobsled and skeleton racing

WHEN: January 3-14, 2018

WHO: The world’s top men and women bobsled and skeleton athletes who are not competing on the IBSF World Cup Series. The nations include Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Croatia, Jamaica, Israel, Italy, Nigeria and New Zealand

WHERE: Lake Placid, N.Y., Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex track

WHY: To earn Olympic berths into the 2018 Olympic Winter Games’ bobsled and skeleton events

Established in 1982, the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) was created by the State of New York to manage the facilities used during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid. ORDA operates Whiteface, Belleayre and Gore Mountain ski areas; the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg; the Olympic speed skating oval, Olympic jumping complex and Olympic arena. As host to international and national championships, the Authority has brought millions of athletes, spectator and participants to the region, resulting in significant economic development.
