New York State Launches Streamlined, Interactive Media Arts Map

New York, NY— Cultural organizations, artists and the public now have a streamlined, interactive tool to engage with New York State’s extensive media arts activities and organizations. The New York Media Arts Map features organizations with a deep commitment to media art and technology as an art form. It serves as a vital tool for identifying art and technology networks, services, and opportunities statewide.

The New York Media Arts Map v3, launched earlier this year, is a project of the New York State Council on the Arts
’ Electronic Media & Film Program, and is managed by Wave Farm, a leading media arts organization located in Greene County, New York.

Now in its third iteration, the Map v3 features a database and calendar of funding opportunities, consultant directory and convening archive, along with a variety of new resources. Users can search for public media art organizations, activities, events and initiatives across the state. The information featured represents the broad spectrum of independent media practice including film festivals, exhibitions, and workshops.

“The New York Media Arts Map aligns with NYSCA’s commitment to serve New York State’s citizens and visitors and provide long term, reliable support to broad initiatives that strengthen the arts, culture and heritage sector,” said Mr. Aby Rosen, Chair, New York State Council on the Arts. “Aside from providing essential information on the state’s vast and varied media arts activities and opportunities, the Map promotes connections and collaborations among these organizations to strengthen their programming and impact.”

NYSCA Electronic Media, Film & Visual Arts Program Director, Karen Helmerson, said “The Map is a powerful tool, elegant in its simplicity and user-friendly interface.  The Map quickly identifies and locates the remarkable talent within, and the great value of, this dynamic new art form.”

Wave Farm Executive Director Galen Joseph-Hunter said, “Wave Farm is delighted to play a part in this project, and we look forward to the Map’s continued growth and expansion. It’s a privilege to work with NYSCA to serve and support media arts across New York State.”

Thank you for all your work toward the latest revision of the New York Media Arts Map. This version has, by far, the most user friendly interface and the most comprehensive information. As both a media arts maker and the administrator of an organization listed on the map, I find it useful in a variety of research - places to go when traveling, possible venues for submission of work or for exhibition proposals, and listings of funders. Having a centralized location that is dedicated to media art helps so much, weeding out commercially oriented media opportunities. It's also a place where people can find out more about us, and as a small non-profit with a very tight budget, we appreciate this visibility. —Debora Bernagozzi, Executive Director, Signal Culture, Owego, NY

For a small nonprofit like the Flaherty Film Seminar with a sixty-two year history, the NY Media Arts Map provides us with vital resources and gives us the opportunity to see at a glance the entirety of New York’s rich cultural landscape.  We are proud to be part of a thriving network among like-minded media arts organizations and welcome the one-stop platform that helps us grow to benefit of the citizens of New York. —Anita Reher, Executive Director, The Flaherty, New York, (Manhattan) NY
