The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance today announced the grand opening of Hope Haven Women’s Center, a new shelter in Jamestown providing 18 beds across 12 units for single adult women experiencing homelessness. The $3.96 million project received a $3.12 million grant from OTDA’s Homeless Housing and Assistance Program (HHAP). “The new Hope Haven Women’s Center provides vital emergency shelter to single women who are experiencing homelessness in Chautauqua County along with the safety, security, and support they need to get on a path to permanent housing,” New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Commissioner Barbara C. Guinn said. “We are grateful to Chautauqua Opportunities and all the partners who supported the development of this important shelter.” Hope Haven Women’s Center is sponsored by Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc., a non-profit Community Action Agency, that owns and manages 65 units of permanent housing for formerly homeless and low-to-moderate income families. Founded in 1965, the organization has a long history of serving low-income residents and preventing homelessness through housing and supportive services. Additional funding for the project includes $181,393 from the City of Jamestown HOME American Rescue Plan Act, $110,000 from the City of Jamestown Community Development Block Grant, $148,500 from the Chautauqua County Land Bank, $196,500 from Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc., and $100,000 from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. Hope Haven began operations in April. Jamestown Mayor Kimberly Ecklund said, “The opening of Hope Haven marks a significant advancement for Jamestown and Chautauqua County, providing stability and safety for women experiencing homelessness—addressing a critical need in our community. We extend our sincere gratitude to Chautauqua Opportunities, the Community Foundation, and all our local, county, and state partners for their collaborative efforts in bringing this project to life. This milestone highlights the power of collective action as we continue to address the ongoing challenges of affordable housing and expanded supportive services in both Jamestown and New York State. With continued collaboration, we aim to build a Jamestown that offers safety, stability, and opportunity for all.” Diane Hewitt-Johnson, the CEO of Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc., said, “Hope Haven is more than just a shelter; it symbolizes a new beginning for homeless women in Chautauqua County. We are proud to open our doors and support them in regaining their independence.” HHAP is an important component of Governor Hochul's five-year, $25 billion Housing Plan to create or preserve 100,000 affordable homes statewide, including 10,000 with support services for vulnerable populations, plus the electrification of an additional 50,000 homes. In addition to playing a central role in the development and preservation of permanent supportive housing in New York State, HHAP provides capital funding that is vital to constructing, rehabilitating, and repairing emergency shelters. |
