Electricians Recruit Apprentices

Watertown, NY (March 24, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Electricians Local Union #910 will conduct a recruitment from April 7, 2014 through March 2, 2015 for 10 electrician apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications must be completed, in person only, at Local Union #910 at 25001 Water Street, Watertown, NY or at 28 New York Road, Plattsburgh, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the first Monday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  If a holiday falls on the first Monday of the month, applications will be accepted on the second Monday.  Applicants must bring a picture I.D. and a current resume at the time of application.  All applications must be submitted no later than March 2, 2015.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age prior to being indentured.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED), or must have a two-year associate degree or higher.  Applicants must have successfully completed two full years of high school math with at least one year of high school algebra or a post-high school algebra course.  Applicants must provide an official transcript of high school education, post-high school education, GED or TASC, after selection and prior to indenture.

    Applicants who can verify the following trade-related experience will not need the proof of education noted above:
    • A minimum of 8,000 hours specifically in the electrical construction trade.
    • A minimum of 4,500 hours as a residential wireman under an IBEW/NECA Local collective bargaining agreement.
    • A minimum of three years of related instruction and 4,500 hours of on-the-job training as an indentured apprentice in a properly registered electrical construction apprenticeship program not sponsored by IBEW/NECA.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.  
  • Must qualify for an interview by passing the electrical trade’s aptitude test, administered by the JATC. There is a $20.00 fee for the test. Please note, you may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from job sites and related instruction classes.  Applicants must be able to travel to and from various job sites within the geographical jurisdiction of LU #910, which includes the counties of Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Clinton, Essex, and Franklin.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must take a physical examination and drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be able to read and understand English.
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions and warnings given in English.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
