Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (March 19, 2014) - The Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee (Rochester) will conduct a recruitment from April 15, 2014 through March 17, 2015 for six carpenter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications may be obtained at the Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Training Center, 21 Jet View Drive, Rochester, NY, on the third Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

    • Must be at least 18 years old.  A signed statement must be submitted at time of application.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
    • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.  A signed statement must be submitted at the time of application.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
    • Must sign a statement indicating that he/she is physically able to perform the work of a carpenter, which includes: 
      • Lifting items weighing over 50 lbs.
      • Working off of scaffolding at various heights.
      • Working in confined spaces.
      • Working in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
      • Performing constant repetitive motions.
      • Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
    • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.  A signed statement attesting to this must be submitted at time of application.
    • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
    • Must be willing and able to attend related instruction at an Empire State Carpenters Regional Training Facility for four one-week periods, during each of the four years of apprenticeship.
    • Must take and pass a math & measuring computation test.
    • Must live within the geographical jurisdiction of Zone 3, which includes Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, and Ontario counties.
    • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
    • Must participate in an interview.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.   Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
