Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

Rock Tavern, NY (October 11, 2013) - The Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee, Local Union #19, will conduct a recruitment from October 17, 2013 through October 16, 2014 for five floorlayer (linoleum, resilient tile, and carpet layer) apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today. 

Applicants must apply in person at the Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Training Center, 52 Stone Castle Road, Rock Tavern, NY, every Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applicants should be prepared to take the Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee Entry Math Test, a math and measurement computation test, at the time of application.

Applicants must attest to the qualifications, as listed below, in a signed statement.  They must also provide required documents of proof when offered a position.  Failure to provide the required proofs (Diploma/GED, DD214 (military), motor vehicle picture ID) will result in immediate dismissal from the program.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).  Must provide transcripts and grades prior to indenture.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of a floorlayer and must attest to the same.
  • Must have the ability to work in a kneeling position for a prolonged period of time.
  • Must be able to work under conditions of inclement weather; in the rain, snow, heat, cold, direct sunlight, etc.
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work off of scaffolding at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Must have the ability to perform constant repetitive motions, including standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of the Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee (Zone 11), which includes the following counties: Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related training.
  • Must take a drug test, at the sponsor’s expense, at the time of appointment.
  • Must be willing to join the union and comply with an indenture agreement, if accepted into the program.
  • Must be willing to attend related instruction for four one-week periods, during each of the four years, at an Empire State Carpenters Regional Training Facility.
  • Must appear for a personal interview.
  • Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
