MEDIA ADVISORY FOR MONDAY, AUGUST 15

DEC To Check Diesel Truck Emissions in Albany’s South End Today, August 15

Pollution Prevention Initiative Ensures Compliance with State and Federal Air Quality Laws and Regulations

What:

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will operate diesel truck checkpoints on Route 32 in Albany’s South End today, August 15, to ensure tailpipe emissions from diesel trucks comply with state and federal environmental laws and regulations. The inspection builds on DEC’s aggressive approach to identify and crack down on air pollution to improve air quality and protect public health in this community.

DEC’s Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) will conduct the inspections using mobile air monitoring equipment, and will also focus on pollution caused by idling.  The monitoring is part of DEC’s Eco-Quality Program to asses and protect air quality in low-income and minority neighborhoods. The inspections will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  DEC will conduct additional unannounced inspections in the coming weeks to ensure polluters are held accountable as well as work with small businesses to ensure they are complying with environmental laws and regulations. DEC ECOs will also be inspecting for other environmental violations as well.
