Crews Rerailed All Eight Train Cars by Midday Friday 

Full Weekend Service Expected as Crews Work to Make Repairs in Time for Monday Morning Commute

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chair and CEO Janno Lieber today visited the site of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) derailment in Queens and provided an update on the LIRR response. As of approximately 1:20 p.m., all eight train cars had been rerailed. Full weekend service is expected. 

“Tremendous progress has been made in recovering from this major accident,” said Chair Lieber. “Shout out to the LIRR wrecking crew and Metro-North wrecking crew who came from White Plains, so we were able to have two cranes to lift these cars much more quickly. Amazing one MTA operation recovering from this.” 

LIRR and Metro-North Railroad crews worked together through the night to rerail six of the eight train cars following the derailment east of Jamaica yesterday, Aug. 3. 

Eastbound trains will continue to bypass Hillside, Hollis, and Queens Village on the Hempstead Branch until repairs are made. There is limited bus service, and NYC Transit will cross-honor on the Q2, Q3, Q8 and Q110 buses for service between Jamaica and Queens Village.
