DEC & DOH TO HOST PUBLIC AVAILABILITY SESSION AND MEETING ON WILLETTS CREEK INVESTIGATION AND CLEANUP STEPS RELATED TO THE DZUS FASTENER STATE SUPERFUND SITE

What: The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and New York State Department of Health (DOH) will host a public availability session and meeting to answer questions from the public and provide an update regarding the ongoing investigations and steps toward remediation in and adjacent to Willetts Creek in West Islip. These sessions will take place on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 beginning at 6 p.m at the West Islip High School at 1 Lions Path, West Islip, New York 11795.

DEC recently determined that the Dzus Fastener site should be reclassified as a Class 2 Superfund site based upon identification of contamination in some of the sediment of Willetts Creek. This reclassification will allow the DEC to expedite remediation of Willetts Creek to ensure protection of public health and the environment. With this reclassification determination now made, the State will conduct the first in a series of public meetings, as well as undertake a public comment period as the clean-up plan is developed. Community involvement is integral to the success of DEC’s Superfund program, and the state will provide opportunities beginning with this availability session and public meeting to answer questions from the public regarding ongoing remediation efforts. Throughout the remediation process, DEC will take appropriate steps to protect the public from potential exposure to the contaminated sediment.

When: Wednesday, March 23, 2016
