Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (December 4, 2019) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for The International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local Union #1, will conduct a recruitment from January 11, 2020 through January 24, 2020 for 100 Elevator-Escalator Constructor and Modernizer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

The recruitment for Local Union #1 will be offered online only, beginning Saturday, January 11, 2020 starting at 10:00 a.m. through January 24, 2020 ending at 11:59 p.m. (24 hours per day), during the recruitment period or until 1,500 applicants have been submitted, whichever comes first. This is a limited-application recruitment. The recruitment will be offered for the period mentioned above or until 1,500 applications have been submitted, whichever comes first.

A notice will be posted on the Local Union #1 website at www.localoneiuec.com once they have received 1,500 applications. Applicants who do not have Internet access may visit their local library or their nearest New York State Department of Labor Career Center (see: https://www.labor.ny.gov/career-center-locator/location-list-all.php).

Applicants must take and pass the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test with a score of at least 70 out of total of 100. Applicant must present a government issued Photo-Id at the time of aptitude test. A $25.00 testing fee is required on the testing day. Payment must be in the form of a postal money order or certified bank check (no cash, credit cards or personal checks will be accepted). Please note, you may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must pass a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must pass a post-offer physical, administered by a physician, at the expense of the sponsor.
  • Must take a tool assessment test designed to assess knowledge of basic tools and their use, as well as basic measuring skills.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of an Elevator-Escalator Constructor and Modernizer, which may include:
    • Working in areas that may have strong odors from chemicals, lubricants and solvents.
    • Wearing personal protective equipment, such as respirators, ear protectors, and face shields, provided by the contractor.
    • Performing repetitive motions, such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, forward bending and heavy lifting of up to 100 pounds for 75% of the time.
    • Climbing and working off of scaffolds, stairs, and ladders and other means of access to elevator machine rooms, overhead and confined spaces.
    • Standing or walking 90% of the time and sitting approximately 10% of the time.
    • Reading small numbers or markings on electrical conductor and machines.
    • Using senses (vision and hearing) to be aware of moving equipment in a noisy environment.
    • Working and communicating orally in loud working conditions such as noisy machine room, hoist way and pit.
    • Working in dark, dusty and dirty areas.
    • Working in extreme temperatures (hot/cold conditions).
    • Working around hazardous materials such as asbestos and silica.

  • Fill out the required fields marked with an asterisk (*).
  • You will be required to create a login and password.
  • It is optional to upload a resume, enter professional licenses, registrations, certifications you possess, education information, professional references, and employment history.
  • After completing, be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “submit profile.”

Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.
