Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (March 9, 2016) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Rochester Laborers, Local Union #435, will conduct a recruitment from April 7, 2016 through March 2, 2017 for 10 skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications can be completed, in person only, at Local Union #435, 20-22 Fourth St., Rochester, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. No applications are to leave the premises. The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must attest that they are physically able to do the work of a skilled construction craft laborer, which may require:
    • Manual Dexterity – the ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
    • Stamina – The ability to exert yourself physically over long periods of time without getting winded or out of breath.
    • Trunk Strength – The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without “giving out” or fatiguing.
    • Consistently lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Must pass a non-DOT drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States.
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license in order to drive company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
