DEC ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF ACCESS ROAD TO FRANK E. JADWIN MEMORIAL STATE FOREST FOLLOWING RECENT FLOODING

Access Road to Independence River Wild Forest Remains Closed Due to Ongoing Construction

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the temporary closure of a portion of the Judy Cole Road in the town of Diana, Lewis County, that serves as an access road on Frank E. Jadwin Memorial State Forest. The road is open for the first 1.5 miles; visitors can park in the area before the washout and access the remaining section for non-motorized uses. This closure is necessary to accommodate repairs following recent flood events. Construction is anticipated to be complete this fall.

DEC reminds the public Smith Road in the town of Watson, Lewis County, which provides access to Panther Pond on the Independence River Wild Forest, remains closed during ongoing construction to rebuild the washed-out roadway.

DEC continues to evaluate storm impacts that could affect public safety and is assessing roads and State facilities in the region with flood or other damage.

Questions regarding closures can be directed to Michael Giocondo at the DEC Region 6 Lowville Office, (315) 376-3521.
