Insulation & Asbestos Workers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (March 2, 2017) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Heat & Frost Insulators, Local Union #12, will conduct a recruitment from April 3, 2017 through April 14, 2017 for 32 insulation and asbestos worker apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the 32 openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions – the Long Island and New York City regions. 

On April 3, 2017, 250 numbered wristbands will be distributed at the Local #12 Union Hall, 35-53 24th St., Long Island City, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. From April 4 through April 14, any remaining wristbands will be distributed at the Local #12 Union Hall, 35-53 24th St., Long Island City, NY, on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Applications will be distributed between April 4 and April 14 to those who received a wristband.

This is a limited-application recruitment. Applications will be available for 10 business days or until 250 applications have been issued, whichever comes first. Signed, completed applications must be returned at a specific date and time based on the applicant’s wristband number.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). A copy of the high school diploma and transcripts, or an official copy of GED/TASC test results will be required with the completed application.
  • Must pass a physical exam, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must sign an affidavit attesting that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade.
  • Must pass a certified drug test, at the expense of the sponsor. The drug test will be given to those under final consideration for each class. Once enrolled in the apprenticeship program, apprentices will be drug tested both yearly and randomly, at the expense of the sponsor.
  • Must take an aptitude test administered by the NYS Department of Labor.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must provide their own tools and work clothes, at an approximate cost of $506.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
