Quinnipiac Extends Lead in ECAC Hockey Conference, While St. Norbert Grabs Top Spot in this Weeks D3 Poll

Lake Placid Gears Up to Host ECAC Men’s Hockey and NCAA D3 Championships

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- The Quinnipiac men’s hockey team extended its lead in the chase for the ECAC Hockey’s regular season crown and a possible number one seed in the conference’s post season tournament. The nation’s top ranked Bobcats (21-1-6, 12-0-4) skated to a 2-all draw against seventh seeded and 15th ranked Cornell (12-7-4, 7-6-3), Friday night, before doubling up Colgate (8-19-2, 4-11-2), 6-3, Saturday.

The Bobcats entered the weekend carrying a six point advantage over second seeded Harvard (13-6-3, 9-4-3), but extended it to seven after the ninth ranked Crimson beat 12th seeded Brown (4-16-4, 2-12-3), 3-2, before falling to Yale (14-5-4, 9-4-3), 2-1. The Friday night victory helped to push the 10th ranked Bulldogs from fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings to a tie with Harvard for second place, both with 21 points.

Following a pair of weekend road losses, RPI (14-10-6, 6-4-6) dropped out of the conference’s top three and into a tie for the number four seed, with St. Lawrence. The 18th ranked Engineers were blanked by the Saints (14-11-3, 8-6-2), 3-0, Friday, and loss to seventh seeded Clarkson (15-10-3, 7-6-3), 4-2, Saturday. The Golden Knights’ win pushed them into the USCHO.Com top 20 poll for the first time this season, where they sit at number-20.

St. Norbert is back atop the USCHO.Com’s Division III poll, overtaking Adrian (17-3-1), who fell to third place. Being the number one team in the country is not new to the Green Knights (18-2-1), they topped the poll from December 2, 2015 through January 25, 2016 before their NCHA conference rival Bulldogs overtook them.

Plattsburgh State (18-3-1) moved up one spot to second place in the weekly poll of 50 voters, including coaches, beat writers and sports professionals from across the country, while Wisconsin Stevens-Point (18-4-1) and Hobart (17-3-2) flip-flopped spots from last week and are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
