Finishing Trades Recruit Apprentices

Cheektowaga, NY (March 6, 2016) - The Finishing Trades Institute of Western and Central New York (Buffalo) will conduct a recruitment from April 5, 2016 through March 7, 2017 for ten painter, decorator, and paperhanger apprentices; five drywall taper (finisher) apprentices; and five glazier apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for three recruitment regions – the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, and Western regions.

Applications can be obtained on the Finishing Trades’ website, www.dc4.org, and mailed to: FTI of W & CNY, 585 Aero Drive, Cheektowaga, NY 14225. Applicants who apply by mail will be contacted to schedule an interview. 

Applications can also be obtained in person from the location noted below. This location also holds open recruitment sessions, where applications can be obtained and submitted, as detailed below. Applicants attending an open recruitment will be interviewed at that time.

585 Aero Drive, Cheektowaga, NY - Applicants must reside in the counties of Allegany, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, Steuben, or Wyoming:

  • Applications can be obtained from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.
  • Open recruitment occurs on the first Tuesday of each month, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically capable of performing the work of the trade, which may include:
    • Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, and towers.
    • Crawling and working in confined spaces.
    • Lifting and carrying 50 to 100 pounds.
    • Walking fast on level surfaces.
  • May be required to pass a physical exam, including drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes. Job sites are throughout western New York. Related instruction will be in Buffalo, at one-week intervals, four times each year.
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
