Roofers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (April 8, 2014) - The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers Local Union #8 will conduct a recruitment from May 5, 2014 through May 16, 2014 for 20 roofer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained in person at Local Union #8, 12-11 43rd Avenue, Long Island City, NY, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., during the recruitment period.  Applications will be available for two weeks or until 200 applications have been distributed, whichever comes first.  Applications must be postmarked no later than May 23, 2014.  Any application postmarked after May 23, 2014 will not be accepted.  Any applicant who misses an appointment or arrives late will be disqualified.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have at least a tenth grade education.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must attest in writing that he/she is physically able to perform the work of a roofer, which includes:
    • Working from ladders and scaffolds at heights that may exceed 50 stories.
    • Lifting materials and equipment weighing up to 65 lbs. for extended periods of time.
    • Repetitive bending and kneeling.
    • Having manual dexterity and range of motion.
    • Working in extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, and wind.
    • Performing strenuous manual labor, including roof removal, roof replacement, and removal of roofing debris.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various work sites and related instruction.
  • Must reside in the jurisdiction of Local Union #8 at the time of application.  This includes the counties of New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, Richmond, Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, and Putnam. It also includes the portion of Hudson County east of the Hackensack River in New Jersey.
  • Proof of minimum qualifications must be in the form of original documents and must be submitted at the time of selection.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
