MTA, NYC Board of Elections Detail Election Day Travel as Unprecedented 24/7 Disinfecting Operation Continues

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the New York City Board of Elections today detailed plans to move poll workers on Election Day. The MTA and NYC Board of Elections continue to work together to make sure each poll site has a travel plan, and is conducting unprecedented outreach to 25,000 poll workers through an email, text and robocall program to make sure poll workers get where they need to go on Election Day.

“New York City Transit is working hand-in-hand with the NYC Board of Elections to move poll workers to poll sites and make Election Day a success,” said Interim President of New York City Transit Sarah Feinberg. “We continue to run an unprecedented level of bus service for those traveling overnight in addition to the ‘Essential Connector’ service while we ensure the subways are cleaner and safer than ever before. Working with the NYC Board of Elections, we continue to reach out to poll workers to make sure they know their options and have an Election Day travel plan.”

“The NYC Board of Elections is happy to partner to with the MTA to move over 25,000 poll workers to our sites across the city on this unprecedented and vital Election Day,” said Michael Ryan, Executive Director, NYC Board of Elections.

Approximately 15,000 workers live in close proximity to poll sites and about 10,000 workers are expected to travel in the early morning hours between 1 to 5 a.m. while the subway system is closed for deep disinfecting. During the overnight closure, the MTA is running the highest level of bus service on record – increasing the operational fleet by 150% and nearly 1,200 trips. Poll workers are encouraged to visit https://new.mta.info/coronavirus/overnight or use the MYmta app to plan their trip.

Poll workers are eligible for the MTA’s “Essential Connector” service if their commute is longer than 1 hour and 20 minutes, requires more than two transfers or a walk of more than a half mile to or from a bus stop. Election Day workers are encouraged to register for the “Essential Connector” service at https://essentialconnector.mta.info/users/sign_up or by contacting the
MTA “Essential Connector” Call Center at (718) 330-1234. The “Essential Connector” app is also available for download in the Apple App Store or Google Play store.
