View Photos of Work Underway and Visit to Station by MTA Leaders on Sunday The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced crews had completed a renovation of the Grand St subway station in Chinatown under New York City Transit’s Re-NEW-vation campaign that brings targeted resources to rebuilt station components within a 55-hour window. At Grand St, crews rebuilt stairwells’ walls and staircases, repainted the ceilings over platforms and tracks, cleaned, replaced and upgraded lighting, refinished benches and power-washed all areas of the station. With a round of 13 station re-NEW-vations announced last month, NYC Transit will be on track to complete 34 stations by the end of June in pursuit of its goal to complete 50 stations by the end of 2023. Stations are selected based on planned weekend outages to minimize impact to customers, and following initial deep cleanings and repairs, routine and specialized cleaning will maintain this level of cleanliness. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and New York City Transit President Rich Davey visited the Grand St station on Sunday to discuss progress with the crew members rebuilding and replacing station components. “It is great to see the energy and spirit of teamwork that our crews bring to this work,” Lieber said. “These Re-NEW-vation projects are taking advantage of short periods of downtime to knock out a huge range of construction and repair work that adds up to a major station upgrade.” “Improving the customer experience is what this is all about,” Davey said. “The improvements are tangible, they are real, and they are happening at stations throughout the city.” About the Station Re-NEW-vation Program The Station Re-NEW-vation Program is one of the major initiatives in NYC Transit’s Faster, Cleaner and Safer plan to improve subway customer experience. The program was initiated with a soft launch over the summer of 2022 on the line in the Bronx, deep cleaning and renovating components of nine stations along the Grand Concourse line while the stations were closed for state of good repair work. Cleanliness is one of the top five attributes customers cite in surveys that would improve satisfaction and encourage them to travel more. In response, NYC Transit developed this program integrating renovations into planned station outages. |
