Down to Eight for Men’s ECAC Hockey Crown

Tickets Still on Sale for Men's ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament, March 17-18, in Lake Placid

ALBANY, N.Y. --- The opening round of the men’s ECAC Hockey Tournament went according to script with no upsets. The four home teams, the opening round’s higher seeds, all moved on to this weekend’s quarterfinals.

Quinnipiac (21-13-2, 15-8-1), the tournament’s fifth-seed, blew past 12th seeded Brown (4-25-2, 3-20-1) with scores of 6-1 and 5-1 and now travel to Canton, N.Y. where they square off against fourth-seeded St. Lawrence. The Saints (16-11-7,12-6-4) had a first round bye and enter the tournament with a 4-5-1 mark in their last 10 games.

Sixth-seeded Clarkson (17-14-5, 12-9-3) handled 11th seeded RPI (8-28-1, 6-18-0), skating past the Engineers with scores of 7-4 and 4-2. Up next for the Golden Knights is the number-three seed Cornell (18-6-5, 13-4-5).

Number-eight Yale (13-13-5, 9-11-4) dispatched ninth-seeded Dartmouth (10-18-3, 7-15-3). The Bulldogs, who now face the conference’s top squad, Harvard (22-5-2, 16-4-2) in their best-of-three series, topped the Big Green with scores of 6-1 and 3-2, in overtime.

Finally, the Princeton (15-14-3, 10-12-3) and Colgate (9-22-6, 7-15-3) series was the only one that extended to three games. The 10th seeded Red Raiders won the opener 3-2, in overtime, but lost the series’ final two games by scores of 4-3 and 2-1.

Up next for seventh-seeded Princeton is the tournament’s second-seed, Union (23-8-3, 16-4-2). The Tigers will need to play their best hockey during their best-of-three series, in Schenectady, where the Dutchmen are 10-3-1 at home. Princeton has not played well on the road, winning just four times.

The remaining four teams will come to Lake Placid, N.Y., Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18, to play in the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament. The winner of this tournament receives an automatic bid to the 71st annual NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament.

The two semifinal games will take place Friday, March 17, at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and the championship game will be played Saturday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m.
