FASTRACK Returns to the Q Line in Brooklyn

Maintenance and Repair Work to Bring Improvements to the Brighton Line

Beginning Monday, September 11, an extensive list of maintenance, cleaning and repair work will be performed on the q line, between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Prospect Park, as MTA New York City Transit’s FASTRACK program returns to the Brighton Line in Brooklyn, for two weeks.  FASTRACK work will be performed for four consecutive weeknights, from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on September 11-15 and again on September 18-22.

During this seven-hour period, an army of maintenance workers will take advantage of train-free access to the tracks to perform dozens of tasks that are vital to providing safe and reliable train service.  These tasks include the repair and replacement of track, third rail, electrical and signal components, debris removal from tracks and under or around the third rail, and the repair of tunnel infrastructure.  Improvements to station aesthetics include painting, platform work, and repairs to signage, lighting fixtures and ADA components.

Wynton Habersham, Senior Vice President for the Department of Subways, said, "FASTRACK has proven to be a significant driver to improve service - FASTRACK is effective because it allows us to consolidate maintenance forces in a concentrated area and perform proactive maintenance."

FASTRACK has been designed around the careful determination that there is adequate alternate means of transportation, including enhanced services along some bus lines during work periods.  Alternative transportation options will be detailed in announcements and posters on trains, in stations and on selected buses.

During this FASTRACK, late night and overnight q trains will not run between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Prospect Park.  q service will operate in two sections, between 96 St and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr, and between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Prospect Park.  Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service, stopping at the 7 Av bq station.  Manhattan-bound and Coney Island-bound customers can transfer for train service at Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and Prospect Park, or take the d or n trains to and from Coney Island-Stillwell Av.  q trains will bypass DeKalb Av in both directions between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.  Brighton Beach-bound b service will end early each weeknight, with downtown trains terminating at Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr after 10:00 p.m.

FASTRACK was introduced in January 2012, devoting four straight weeknights to maintenance work in tunnels, stations and on tracks by suspending service within a given line segment for a seven-hour period between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.  During our previous FASTRACK along this portion of the Brighton Line in May 2015, NYC Transit track workers scraped and cleaned 4,310 feet of track, removed 107,300 pound of debris and installed 1,534 tie plates, 1,003 friction pads and 2 new rails.  Infrastructure crews grouted 154 leaks, cleaned 50 feet of trough and 1,350 feet of drains, serviced 7 muck drains and 3 pump plants, repaired 10 feet of drain line and 420 feet of hand rails, and replaced 509 light bulbs.

At subway stations, workers scraped and cleaned 6,800 feet of station surfaces, primed 14,045 square feet, and painted 41,490 square feet of station surfaces including 26 stairway coping safety features.  Three hundred feet of rubbing boards at platform edges were repaired, 7 vent drains were cleaned, 148 columns were painted, and 106 feet of drain lines were installed.  In addition, 54 square feet of tile was replaced, as well as 6 platform signs and 8 wayfinding signs. Signal crews tested 37 signals, serviced 31 others, performed 22 monthly inspections, and serviced 2 switches.  In the area of electronic maintenance, workers serviced 24 CCTV cameras, and 16 monitors, as well as performed maintenance on 155 public address speakers and other customer information systems.

Our next FASTRACK overnight closure will be on the 123 lines for two consecutive weeks from October 16-20 and October 23-27, between 34 St-Penn Station and South Ferry in Lower Manhattan, and Atlantic Av- Barclays Ctr in Brooklyn.
