Carpenters Recruit Apprentices

 Cheektowaga, NY (May 20, 2013) -- The Empire State Regional Carpenters Joint  Apprenticeship and Training Committee Local Union #289 will conduct a recruitment from May 7, 2013 through April 1, 2014 for 10 carpenter apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications must be obtained and submitted in person at the Construction Industry Employers Association, 2660 William Street, Cheektowaga, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  No applications will be accepted by mail.

The Committee requires that applicants:

    • Must be at least 18 years old – signed statement must be submitted at time of application; proof required at time of employment.
    • Must be a high school graduate or have a General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) as recognized by the New York State Department of Education - signed statement must be submitted at time of application; proof required at time of employment.
    • Must sign a statement, at the time of application, that they are physically able to do the work of a carpenter.  This may include heavy work and working at heights.
    • Must be a resident of the geographic jurisdiction of Local Union #289, which includes: Zone A - Erie County; and Zone B – Niagara, Genesee, Orleans, and Wyoming counties.
    • Must take the UBC Qualifying Math Test, administered by the sponsor.
    • Must have a driver’s license and/or reliable transportation to and from work and school - signed statement must be submitted at time of application.
    • Must pass a drug test, at the Apprenticeship Committee’s expense, at time of employment.
    • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214 – if applicable.
    • Each eligible applicant will have to participate in an interview.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
