Skyrocketing Mega Millions & Powerball Jackpots Generate $84.4 Million for NY Schools and Lottery Retailers

The jackpots for Mega Millions and Powerball continue to grow and thus far have generated more than $84 million for New York’s public schools and small businesses across the state.

“New Yorkers are rightfully excited about the astronomical jackpots of these games, and hopefully the lucky winners of both games are right here in the Empire State,” said Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer. “And for those New Yorkers who don’t win the jackpot or one of the other life-changing 2nd prizes, they should know that their purchase is still a win for New York State.”

As of March 25, 2024, the sales for the jackpots have generated a combined $72 million for New York’s public schools (Mega Millions: $40 million; Powerball: $32 million). The jackpot sales for the games have also generated $12.4 million in commissions for lottery retailers – many of which are small businesses (Mega Millions: $7 million; Powerball: $5.4 million).

The current Mega Millions jackpot of $1.1 billion began rolling December 12, 2023, with the next drawing on March 26, 2024.

The current Powerball jackpot of $800 million began rolling January 3, 2024, with the next drawing taking place tonight.
