World Cup Luge: A Thanksgiving Weekend Special in Lake PlacidWorld’s top athletes race this weekend at Mt. Van Hoevenberg |
|
LAKE PLACID – With the early onset of winter, Lake Placid is up and running for the 2019-2020 season of snow and ice sports and competitions. On the topic of snow, terrain at Whiteface Mountain expands daily, while cross country skiers and snowshoers are already in their glory. Turning to the ice, the New York Olympic Regional Development Authority and USA Luge welcome Thanksgiving holiday revelers at Mount Van Hoevenberg this weekend as World Cup luge racing makes its annual visit to Lake Placid. Most of the Olympic medalists from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang will be in the field for the second stop on the Viessmann World Cup tour. The circuit opened last weekend in Innsbruck/Igls, Austria. The American squad will be led by 2018 Olympic silver medalist Chris Mazdzer, of nearby Saranac Lake; last Saturday’s World Cup silver medalist Summer Britcher, of Glen Rock, Pa.; and 2019 World Championship bronze medalist Emily Sweeney, of Lake Placid. There will be two full days of training on Wednesday and Thursday (Nov. 27-28), followed by Nations Cup qualifying on Friday (Nov. 29) at 9:30 AM. World Cup action kicks off Saturday (Nov. 30) with the doubles event at 9 AM followed by the women’s singles (live on NBC at 2:30 PM). The final day of high-speed action is Sunday (Dec. 1) starting at 8:20 AM with men’s singles, with the viewer-friendly sprint World Cup to conclude the weekend.
