Plumbers & Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Oswego, NY (February 22, 2018) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers and Steamfitters, Local Union #73, will conduct a recruitment from March 05, 2018 through February 04, 2019 for 10 plumber and steamfitter apprentices and five heating, ventilation, and air conditioning mechanic apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today. 

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions – the Central and North Country regions. This program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Cayuga, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, and St. Lawrence.

Applications will be available at the following Local #73 offices and times, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period:

  • 705 E. Seneca St., Oswego, NY – the first Monday of every month from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • 33 ½ Depot St., Gouverneur, NY – the last Monday of every month from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Please note applications must be received no later than February 04, 2019.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must attest that they are physically able to perform the work required, which may include:
    • Moderate to heavy lifting.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Working from ladders and scaffolds at various heights.
    • Working in extreme cold and heat.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must pass a drug screening and background check, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must purchase text materials for class at an average cost of $50.00 per year.
  • Must participate in an interview, if selected.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must take and pass a comprehension test with a minimum score of 70.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
