Electricians Recruit Apprentices

Niagara Falls, NY (June 2, 2014) – The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Niagara County Electricians Local Union #237 will conduct a recruitment from July 2, 2014 through July 1, 2015 for four electrician (house or residential) apprentices and ten electrician apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Finger Lakes and Western regions. 

Applications can be completed at Local Union #237, 8803 Niagara Falls Blvd., Niagara Falls, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every Wednesday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  All applications must be completed on the premises.

Applicants must pay a $10.00 testing fee at the time of application.  Please note: You may request that this fee be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must provide evidence of successfully completing a full credit of high school algebra or an equivalent.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of an electrician, which includes:
    • Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, or towers of various heights.
    • Crawling and working in confined spaces such as attics, manholes and crawlspaces.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must qualify for an interview by obtaining a score of 4 or higher on the Electrical Trade Aptitude Test.
  • Must provide an official high school transcript and proof of any applicable post-high school education or training, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. 
  • Must be a resident, for at least one year, of either Niagara County or one of the following towns in Orleans County: Carlton, Ridgeway, Albion, Gaines, Shelby, Yates, or Barre.
  • Must be able to read, hear, and understand instructions and warnings.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
