Albany, NY (May 30, 2013) – The Capital District Sheet Metal Workers Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, Local Union #83, will conduct a recruitment from June 3, 2013 through May 19, 2014 for six sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Local Union #83, 718 Third Street, Albany, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. each Monday of the month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications will not be accepted on 9/2/2013 and 11/11/2013.  Applications are also available online at www.smwlocal83.org.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D) with a passing grade in Algebra, Math I or minimum of 47 on the G.E.D. Math. (Copy of high school transcript or G.E.D. certificate with scores is required.)
• Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by a signed affidavit. Work includes the following:
• Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to noise and respiratory irritants.  It may also include prolonged standing, walking and repeated squatting and/or bending.
• Working under extreme temperatures, such as outside on winter days or inside in confined areas where high temperatures can be reached (such as a boiler room).
• Lifting and/or moving heavy objects and equipment (up to 50 lbs.) and working off ladders and scaffolds at unprotected heights.
• Must have a valid New York State driver’s license.  Apprentices may be required to drive company vehicles.  (Copy of license will be required.)
• Must have reliable transportation to and from work and apprentice school.
• Must submit to a drug screening at the Committee’s expense – if selected for the program.
• Must take the U.S. Department of Labor BOLT Reading and Arithmetic Achievement tests.
• Must have resided in the following jurisdiction for at least six months prior to application. Jurisdiction includes the following counties:  Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.
