Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (May 30, 2013) -- The Bricklayers & Allied Craft workers, Local Union #3 – JATC (Rochester Chapter), will conduct a recruitment from June 6, 2013 through May 1, 2014 for 16 bricklayer and mason apprentices, four tile setter apprentices, and three tile, marble & terrazzo finisher apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local Union #3 NY Rochester Chapter Training Center, 3750 Monroe Avenue, Pittsford, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the first Thursday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applicants must apply in person.

The Committee requires that applicants:

    • Must be at least 18 years old - at the time of indenture.
    • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by affidavit signed by applicant stating the same. Workers may be required to do the following:
      • Stand for prolonged periods.
      • Kneel for prolonged periods.
      • Climb ladders and balance on scaffolds.
      • Bend frequently to obtain bricks or blocks laying on scaffold.
      • Bend frequently to obtain and lay stones.
      • Bend to pull screed (concrete-leveling device).
      • Reach for handles, grasp and manipulate stones, hand tools, plum bob and plum line, tools brick & block, and hand and power tools.
      • Use near vision to read blueprints, guide marks on rulers & marks on level.
      • Use depth perception to verify trueness of alignment of stones, or bricks and blocks with plumb bob.
      • Lift, carry and position block weighing up to 40 pounds.
      • Pull screed with estimated 50+ pounds of effort and lift power tools weighing up to 25 pounds.
      • Be exposed to noise of power saws and grinders used to cut blocks and bricks; and to background noise, such as heavy equipment and other construction machinery; and to dusts when sawing tile, brick and blocks and grinding concrete.
      • Avoid potential danger from falling off scaffolds and dropping heavy stone or block on feet.
      • Avoid potential danger from falling through floor openings.
      • Perform outside work in temperatures extremes, from 28 degrees F up to 95-100 degrees F, which can be in confined workspaces. In some instances, temperatures may exceed 200 degrees F for short work periods.
    • Must take a drug test and physical exam to be paid by JATC, at the time of indenture.
    • Must have proof of employment authorization to work in the USA, to be presented at the time of indenture.
    • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and school.
    • Must verify understanding that the trade may require work from scaffolds.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
