Electricians Recruit Apprentices

Clay, NY (May 11, 2015) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Electricians, Local Union #43 (Syracuse), will conduct a recruitment from June 10, 2015 through May 11, 2016 for 20 electrician apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the 20 openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for the Central, Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley, and Southern Tier regions.  This program’s jurisdiction includes the counties of Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Otsego, Tompkins, and Wayne.

Applications can be obtained at the John J. Barry Training Center, 4566 Waterhouse Road, Clay, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., on the second Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  A computer will be made available for applicants during these times as well.  Applications will also be available at any time online at www.cnyjatc.org.  All applications must be received no later than May 18, 2016. The Committee requires that applicants:

·         Must be at least 18 years old.

·         Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED), including one year of algebra, Math Course 1, or high school Regents math.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.

·         Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of an electrician, which may include:

o    Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, or towers of various heights.

o    Crawling and working in confined spaces.

·         Must be able to read and understand English.

·         Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions and warnings.

·         Must have reliable transportation to and from various work sites and related instruction.

·         Must take the American Institute for Research Electrical Aptitude Test.  A $20.00 testing fee will be required.  Please note, you may request that this fee be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need. 

·         Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture

·         Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
