Can’t Meet the April 17 Tax Filing Deadline? Request a Filing Extension

E-file the extension for free online no later than Tuesday, April 17

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today reminded taxpayers to request an automatic extension of time to file if they are unable to submit a completed income tax return by the April 17 deadline. The extension request is due by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, April 17.

“We understand that some taxpayers might need additional time to complete and file their income tax returns,” said Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. “An extension will provide them more time to file, but not—it’s important to note—more time to pay any tax owed.”

Taxpayers must file the extension, along with the properly estimated tax due, by the April 17 deadline.

How to request your extension

Taxpayers can request an extension of time to file using our online Personal Income Tax Extension service. The online and e-file options provide a confirmation that we received the extension request.

Taxpayers must make full payment of the properly estimated tax balance due when requesting an extension of time to file. Personal income tax returns filed on extension are due no later than Monday, October 15, 2018.
