United Service Workers Recruit Apprentices

Bohemia, NY (October 26, 2022) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for United Service Workers, Local Union #355, will conduct a recruitment from January 9, 2023 through January 23, 2023 (excluding January 16, 2023) for two Sheet Metal Worker apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications can be completed at the LU #355 Training Center, 267 Knickerbocker Avenue, Bohemia, NY 11716, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (with the exception of January 16, 2023) excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. All applications must be completed on site and received no later than January 23, 2023.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED), including one year of high school algebra.
  • Must sign an affidavit stating that they are physically able to perform the work required of a Sheet Metal Worker, which may include:
    • Working an 8-hour day continually on their feet.
    • Lifting and carrying weights in excess of 75 pounds for extended periods.
    • Working in severe weather conditions and extreme temperatures for extended periods.
    • Working in restrictive or confined spaces.
    • Working at heights of 20 feet or more on ladders, scaffolds, scissor lifts, or boom lifts.
    • Working in ditches or trenches up to six feet deep.
  • Must be able to read, hear, and understand instructions and warnings.
  • Must pass a substance abuse test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school (in and around Nassau and Suffolk counties).
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
