Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (March 30, 2018) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for The International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local Union #27, will conduct a recruitment from June 1, 2018 through June 30, 2018 for one elevator-escalator constructor and modernizer apprentice, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications must be completed online only, 24 hours per day (Monday through Sunday), during the recruitment period at www.neiep.org/careers.aspx and by “clicking the link for Apprenticeship Opportunities”, selecting the (city/state) recruitment (Rochester, NY). Applicants who do not have Internet access may visit their local library or their nearest New York State Department of Labor Career Center. Applicants having problems with the application process may contact the local area coordinator at jmedeiros@neiep.org.   

Applicants must take and pass the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (EIAT) with a score of at least 70. A $25.00 testing fee is required on the testing day. The payment must be in the form of a Money Order or Bank Certified Check (no cash or personal checks will be accepted). Please note, you may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need. Applicants must provide valid photo identification on the day of EIAT test. All applications must be received by no later than June 30, 2018.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof of education (a high school transcript, or high school diploma, or an official report of GED or TASC test results) will be required after an offer of employment and prior to indenture as an apprentice. Failure to provide proof on stated day of offer of employment and prior to being indentured, said apprentice shall be removed from the hiring list immediately for failing to meet stated requirements.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture. 
  • Must take a tool assessment designed to assess knowledge of basic tools and their use, as well as basic measuring skills. Scores are a part of evaluation.
  • Must attest to be physically able to perform the work required of the trade, which may include, lifting, climbing, and working from heights, without posing a threat to the health of themselves or others.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
