DEC Statement on Spill at Momentive Performance Materials

On Friday, at approximately 3:30p.m., New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Spills Response unit and DEC staff stationed on-site immediately responded to report of a spill of hazardous materials at Momentive Performance Material’s plant in Waterford, NY.

A pipe rack system over Schoolhouse Lane malfunctioned resulting in the initially reported release of approximately 300 gallons of hydrochloric acid.  DEC Spills Response unit and emergency responders have stopped the spill.

DEC crews are collecting water samples along the Mudderkill creek. No drinking water sources have been impacted and there is no threat to public health and environment.

DEC crews will remain onsite and are launching a full investigation into the cause of the spill.
