Roofers Recruit Apprentices

West Seneca, NY (April 29, 2016) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Roofers, Local Union #74 (Western NY), will conduct a recruitment from May 30, 2016 through May 26, 2017 for 20 roofer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the 20 openings listed for roofer apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Finger Lakes and Western regions. 

Applications must be completed in person at Local Union #74, 2800 Clinton Street, West Seneca, NY, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. 

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must pass a physical agility test administered by WNY Health Works. This includes lifting 50 lbs. from floor to waist and from waist to shoulder. It also includes carrying 50 lbs. for a distance of 20 feet.
  • Must sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:
    • Working on their feet most of the day.
    • Lifting and carrying heavy materials.
    • Climbing and working off of ladders.
    • Hoisting roofing materials.
    • Regularly crouching and stooping.
  • Must have excellent depth perception.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must submit certificates and work records after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
