Metro-North Railroad to Host Outreach Event to Encourage Contracting Opportunities for New York State Certified Minority and Women-Owned Businesses

Event Will Feature Information about Harmon Yard Shop Design-Build Projects

Metro-North Railroad today announced that it will host a special outreach event in partnership with Skanska-ECCO to encourage NYS certified Minority and Women-Owned Businesses to apply for design-build subcontracting opportunities to complete improvements to the railroad’s Croton-Harmon Yard project.

This networking event, which is part of the MTA’s effort to improve the participation of women and minority owned business in capital projects, will take place on Friday, March 1, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Yonkers Public, Library, 1 Larkin Center, Yonkers, New York.

At Croton-Harmon, a 100-acre facility located between the train station and Croton Point Park, crews operate around-the-clock to service, repair and maintain the railroad’s fleet of electric cars, coaches and locomotives that serve all three east-of-Hudson lines.   The facility is the center of the railroad’s maintenance activities, and its rebuild secures the on-going safe and reliable train service for our customers.

Metro-North has transformed this century-old facility into a state of-the art complex that features three new technologically advanced maintenance equipment facilities, expanded train storage capacity, new locomotive servicing stations, and the first “wheel truing” facility in North America that can smooth four wheels simultaneously so that cars travel safely and efficiently over the tracks.

Subcontracting opportunities for the final stage of the Yard’s include the abatement, demolition and disposal of remaining of the facility’s “main shop,” buildings, where Metro-North formerly performed most of its train maintenance, construction of a new 6-track, double-ended Electrical Multiple Units Running Repair and Support Shop.

“This outreach event is a wonderful opportunity for firms that have been historically disenfranchised from the construction industry to do business with the MTA,” said Metro-North President, Catherine Rinaldi.  “I’m proud to be part of this effort to increase the diversity of workforce.”

“In partnership with Skanska-ECCO, the goal of this morning’s session is to maximize the participation of NYS certified minority and women-owned Businesses and achieve the project’s 30% MWBE goal”, said Michael J. Garner, MTA Chief Diversity Officer.  “The MTA is committed to providing contract opportunities for NYS certified MWBEs and this morning’s session will provide specific information for this $365 million design build project and how firms can apply for subcontract consideration.”
