Long Island City, NY (January 24, 2014) -- The Bricklayers & Allied Craft Workers, Local Union # 1, will conduct a recruitment from January 31, 2014 through December 19, 2014 for three stonemason apprentices; 10 pointer, caulker & cleaner apprentices; 10 bricklayer & mason apprentices; and three plasterer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will be available at the International Masonry Institute Local Union #1 Training Facility, 12-07 44^th Avenue, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., during recruitment period, on the following dates: 1/31/14, 2/28/14, 3/28/14, 4/25/14, 5/30/14, 6/27/14, 9/26/14, 10/31/14, 11/21/14 and 12/19/14. No mailed-in applications will be accepted. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. There will be no admittance after 8:30 a.m. Testing will be held until 10:00 a.m.

 The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years old. Proof of age is required at the time of indenture (birth certificate, state-issued driver’s license, any state or federal ID showing date of birth)
• Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED); proof is required at time of indenture.
• Must submit a copy of DD214 at time of indenture, if applicable.
• Must possess sufficient reading and math comprehension skills to satisfactorily complete on-the-job training and related technical instruction, as determined by the JATC Basic Assessment Skills exam given during the application process.
• Must be willing to commute within the jurisdiction of Local 1, which is all five boroughs of NYC, and Nassau and Suffolk counties.
• Must have reliable transportation to locations where no reasonable access to public transportation exists.
• Must be willing to submit to and pass a drug test, at the sponsor’s expense, at the time of indenture.
• Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others, as determined in the interview and pre-employment program.
• Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by signed “Affidavit for Physical Performance” form. Such work may include:
  • Performing all phases of work in the construction industry, which includes working with hand and power tools, and being exposed to loud noise, hazardous machinery, hazardous voltages and respiratory irritants.
  • Prolonged standing, climbing, walking, and repeated squatting, stretching and bending.
  • Working under extreme temperatures ranging from 0 degrees (outside work in the winter) to extreme heat in summer. Additionally, everyday work may be at such temperatures and in confined areas where movement is greatly limited.
  • Lifting and moving heavy supplies and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds, and working from ladders, scaffolds and personnel lifts that may exceed 100 feet.
