MEDIA ADVISORY: MTA Police Department to Open Premiere Canine Training SchoolOnly Mass Transit Oriented Police Canine Training School in the United States

The MTA PD’s canine training facility in Stormville, New York, will open tomorrow, June 8. This sophisticated, 17,000 square foot facility was designed to train dogs to meet the unique demands of patrolling the trains, stations, yards and tracks of Metro-North Railroad, the Long Island Rail Road and the Staten Island Railway. It’s the only state-of-the art ‘mass transit’ specific canine training school in the nation. WHO: MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast, MTA Police Chief Michael Coan, other MTA and police officials, elected officials…and police canines.
WHAT: The MTA PD has the largest mass-transit canine explosives detection force in the country, with approximately 50 dogs in service at any time. Last year, the canine teams responded to over 26,000 requests for assistance, and inspected and cleared 2,748 unattended packages.
