Tax Day Returns to April 15

Due date for personal income tax filing falls on traditional deadline

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today reminded taxpayers that the deadline to submit their personal income tax returns is Monday, April 15. After three years of receiving a few extra days to file because of certain holidays, taxpayers should be aware that this year Tax Day returns to its traditional date.

“The fact that Tax Day is on April 15 might come as a surprise to some taxpayers who have come to expect a few extra days to meet their filing obligations,” said New York State Taxpayer Rights Advocate Margaret Neri. “Free resources are available on our website to ease filing and help taxpayers meet the deadline.”

New York taxpayers with adjusted gross household incomes of $66,000 or less in 2018 may, for instance, take advantage of user-friendly tax preparation and filing software available at our website’s Free File your income tax return page.

Taxpayers should ensure they have all the information they need to file and then should carefully review their returns after they have finished preparing them. Filing in a rush can lead to errors and subsequent processing and refund delays.

Those who don’t think they’ll be able meet the April 15 filing deadline can request an automatic extension of time to file. The extension doesn’t allow more time to pay, though; taxpayers must make full payment of the properly estimated amount owed when requesting the extension.

For details, please see Apply for an extension of time to file an income tax return.
