Plumbers & Steamfitters Recruit Apprentices

Orchard Park, NY (July 29, 2013) -- The Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union #22 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of Western New York will conduct a recruitment from August 6, 2013 through August 5, 2014 for three steamfitter and three plumber apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #22, 3651 California Rd., Orchard Park, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.  Applications will also be available during normal business hours at the NYS Department of Labor offices in Jamestown, Olean, Albion, and Dunkirk.  Applications will be accepted at Local Union #22 only during the same schedule as indicated above.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D).
  • Must attest to being physically able to perform the work required of a plumber/steamfitter.
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles.
  • Must be a resident and must have lived within the jurisdiction of Local Union #22 for at least one year.  This includes:
    • All townships in Erie County (Zone A).
    • Genesee County – townships of Alabama, Oakfield, Elba, Pembroke, Batavia, Darien, and Alexander (Zone A).
    • All townships in Niagara County (Zone B).
    • Orleans County – townships of Yates, Ridgeway, and Shelby (Zone B).
    • All townships in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties (Zone C).
    • Allegany County – townships of Allen, Alma, Amity, Angelica, Belfast, Bolivar, Caneadea, Centerville, Clarksville, Cuba, Friendship, Genesee, Granger, Hume, New Hudson, Rushford, Scio, and Wirt (Zone C).
  • Must pass a drug test, at the sponsor’s expense, after selection as an apprentice.
  • Must pass a qualifying battery basic “Work Keys” assessment - achievement tests in Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Locating Information.
  • Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable.
  • Must produce, if tentatively selected, any documentation of facts stated on the application, including high school diploma or equivalent, within fourteen days of receiving an acceptance letter.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
