Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

Rochester, NY (July 08, 2016) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for The International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local Union #27, will conduct a recruitment from August 08, 2016 through September 08, 2016 for one elevator-escalator constructor and modernizer apprentice, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications will be available online only, 24 hours per day, during the recruitment period at www.neiep.org/careers.aspx and by “clicking the link for apprenticeship Opportunities”.  Applicants who do not have Internet access may visit their local library or their nearest New York State Department of Labor Career Center. Applicants having problems with the application process may contact the local area coordinator at jmedeiros@neiep.org.   

Applicants must take and pass the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test with a score of at least 70.  A $25.00 testing fee is required on the testing day.  The payment must be in the form of a money order or bank certified check (no cash or personal checks will be accepted).  Please note, you may request that this fee be waived.  Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.  Applicants must provide valid photo identification on the day of the test.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture. Failure to provide proof of education will result in immediate removal from the hiring list.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must take a tool assessment designed to assess knowledge of basic tools and their use, as well as basic measuring skills.
  • Must attest to be physically able to perform the work required of the trade, which may include, lifting, climbing, and working from heights, without posing a threat to the health of themselves or others.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from job sites and related instruction.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
