Bronx Retiree’s Persistence Pays off with an $11,500,000 Lotto Jackpot

Leroy Beckford, 83, of the Bronx plays the New York Lottery draw games Lotto, TAKE 5, and Numbers every day. His persistence finally paid off on July 5, 2014 when he hit the Lotto jackpot for $11,500,000.

On the day of the drawing, Beckford stopped at 7 & 7 Deli and Grocery at 857 East 241st Street in the Bronx to buy his tickets. Beckford said, “I chose Lotto because that is my favorite game to play, and I used Quick Pick numbers.”

The next day Beckford asked a friend to check the winning numbers for the previous night’s Lotto drawing and that’s when he knew he was a new Lottery millionaire. Beckford said, “I was in total shock. I just couldn’t believe it, and then I called my daughter to tell her the good news.”

Beckford claimed his winning ticket on July 21 at the Lottery’s Manhattan Customer Service Center. He opted to receive his Lotto prize in one lump sum payment and will receive $4,591,672 after required withholdings.

Dad’s Trip to the Barbershop Lands Daughter a $1,000,000 Lottery Prize

Daniella Marin, of Ridgewood, Queens, was with her Dad on Sunday, July 6 when he went to get a haircut.

While he was in the barbershop, Marin walked around the corner to Metro Candy at 96-13 Metropolitan Avenue in Forest Hills to buy some snacks. She had a few extra dollars in her pocket, and decided to buy an Extreme 8’s Lottery ticket.

Marin said, “I chose that game because it was new, and I had never played it before.  I thought to myself, ‘Maybe I’ll get lucky with this one.’”

Marin scratched the ticket right in the store. When she thought she had won, she started reading the rules over and over again. Then she used the ticket scanner and the display said “Jackpot.  Big Winner.”

Marin said to herself, “Oh my God!  This can’t be true!” She met up with her Dad after his haircut and told him quietly “we have to go home right away.”

Once they got home, Marin showed him the ticket, and he didn’t believe it was true. Then her Mom came home, and she didn’t believe it either. It was only after Marin explained the rules a couple of times did they believe that she was a new Lottery millionaire.

Marin claimed her winning ticket on July 11 at the Lottery’s Manhattan Customer Service Center. She chose to receive her Extreme 8’s prize in one lump sum payment and will receive $485,971 after required withholdings. Rockland County Mom Shares $1,000,000 Lottery Prize with Her Two Sons

Elisabeth Koch, of Blauvelt, Rockland County, won a $1,000,000 prize on the New York Lottery’s 25X the Cash scratch-off game.

Koch bought her ticket on June 21, 2014 at V & S Quick Mart at 23 Route 303 in Tappan. She said she went to the store to buy a graduation card and decided to buy a Lottery ticket as well. Koch said she picked the 25X the Cash ticket “just at random.”

Koch scratched her ticket right in the store and said she saw the word “jackpot,” but wasn’t quite sure what that meant. So, she gave the ticket to the store clerk to scan, and he said to her, “You just won a million dollars.” Koch said her reaction was both shock and disbelief.

Later that afternoon, she called her sons, Ronald and Charles, who both live in Washington Township, New Jersey. She started each conversation by saying “You better sit down.” Both sons immediately thought that something was wrong with their Mom. Koch then explained that she won $1,000,000 dollars on a Lottery scratch-off game, and both sons said they thought she was just playing a joke on them. But Koch persisted and kept saying to them “it is the truth.” It wasn’t until Ronald e-mailed a picture of the ticket to Charles that they both believed it was true.

The Kochs claimed their Lottery prize on June 30, 2014 at the Lottery’s Manhattan Customer Service Center. They will split the prize equally and each receive $167,656.33 after required withholdings.
