Plumbers Recruit Apprentices

Long Island City, NY (May 14, 2018) - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Plumbers Local Union #1 will conduct a recruitment from June 11, 2018 through June 22, 2018 for 100 plumber apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications must be obtained in person by the applicant at the Local Union #1 Training Center, 37-11 47th Avenue, Long Island City, NY, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, during the recruitment period. Applications will be available for 10 business days or until 1,000 applications have been issued, whichever occurs first. All applicants are required to bring a form of positive proof of identification. Only one (1) application per person will be issued until the supply of 1,000 is exhausted.

All applications must be fully completed and returned by hand to the Training Center office between Friday, July 27, 2018 and Thursday, August 2, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All applications must be returned no later than Thursday, August 2, 2018. Upon return, the application must be fully completed and submitted with any relevant related documentation. A receipt will be issued to the person who returns the completed application.

There is a $25.00 application fee for the apprenticeship program. Applicants must submit a $25.00 Money Order (no cash or checks will be accepted) with the application. Applicants may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of entry into the apprenticeship program. Must show proof of age at time of job offer (Birth Certificate, Passport, Driver’s License)
  • Must have a high school diploma reflecting a minimum of four calendar years of high school work and the scores in both Sequential Math I and Sequential Math II must be at least a 70 or a “C”. In lieu of the required math course grades, the Committee will accept applicants who hold a H.S. diploma accompanied by a TABE 10 (Test of Adult Basic Education-Level A) Math test (Complete Battery - Level A) with a “Total Math” score of 10 or higher. 
    • In lieu of a four-year High School Diploma, the Committee will accept applicants who hold a High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma issued by the State Department of Education of the state in which the test is taken, with Transcript confirming a GED exam or TASC exam math score of 550 or better. In lieu of the required math score, the Committee will accept applicants who hold a HSE Diploma accompanied by a TABE 10 Math test (Complete Battery-Level A) with a “Total Math” score of 10 or better.
    • International Academic Credentials must be accompanied by a TABE 10 Math test (Complete Battery-Level A) with a “Total Math” score of 10 or better.
  • Must take and pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, at the time of job offer.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the USA.
  • Must take a New York State Department of Labor aptitude test administered by the NYSDOL. There is no testing fee.
  • Must appear for a personal interview, if selected.
  • Must provide military transfer or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
