DEC REGION 8 ANNOUNCES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CARNCROSS ROAD TO HOWLAND ISLAND AT NORTHERN MONTEZUMA WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREAClosure Due to High Water Levels Likely to Extend Into Spring Turkey Season |
|
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the closure of Carncross Road, Town of Savannah, at Northern Montezuma WMA in Wayne County, due to flood-stage water. Continued precipitation events in the watershed have made the road hazardous for vehicle passage starting at the bridge over the Seneca River. Carncross Road is the only vehicle access point for the Howland Island Unit. Access to Howland Island is available by boat with hand launches available adjacent to the bridge on Carncross Road and near the Northern Montezuma Field Office at the end of Morgan Road, Town of Savannah. Trailered boats can be launched at the Seneca River Boat Launch, Route 38, in the Town of Conquest. Visitors are reminded that the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) bridge extending from Howland Island Road, Village of Port Byron, Cayuga County, is closed to all traffic, including foot traffic. For more information on conditions and regulations at Northern Montezuma WMA and Lake Shore Marshes WMA, please contact the Northern Montezuma WMA Field Office at 315-365-2134 or email R8wildlife@dec.ny.gov. |
